4 Money Beliefs that are Hindering your Finances

0

A money belief is simply a way of thinking or a conviction about money.  Everybody has at least one money belief which has the power to shape your financial destiny, either positively or negatively.

Money beliefs can arise as a result of our experiences, background and upbringing.  Many times these beliefs need to be renewed before you can walk in God’s financial destiny for you.  If you have any of the following money beliefs, you might be hindering your own financial progress without realizing it:

Money Belief #1 – “I have to work tirelessly to build wealth”

Most people don’t seek out proper financial education so they don’t know the keys to creating lasting wealth.  Working hard is not a bad thing but working tirelessly and toiling for money is contrary to God’s plan for your financial success.  You don’t have to work round the clock to make ends meet, God can show you a better and much easier way if you seek Him.

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness.” Proverbs 23:4 NIV

“The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it.” Proverbs 10:22 NIV

Money Belief #2 – “I have to keep hold of as much money as possible”

You won’t build lasting wealth by gathering and heaping up money.  God’s principles for financial increase come by multiplication not addition.  Generosity and giving will lead to multiplied returns of blessings.  In simply terms, the more He can get through you, the more He will get to you.  The Living Bible puts it this way:

“It is possible to give away and become richer! It is also possible to hold on too tightly and lose everything. Yes, the liberal man shall be rich! By watering others, he waters himself.” – Proverbs 11:24-25 NIV

Money Belief #3 – “Biblical principles about prosperity and giving don’t work”

This money belief is usually formed after a negative experience at church.  A person gives money in response to the pastor’s preaching and then… “nothing happens”; the money harvest they were promised didn’t materialize.  That person then becomes bitter and in their heart they start to believe it’s all just a scam.

Yes, there are some who have misused prosperity teachings for personal gain but don’t let that make you throw the baby out with the bath water.  The Word of God works and so does it’s principles about money, giving etc.  Make sure that your giving is from the heart and in response to God’s Word not man’s voice.  Don’t allow the enemy to deceive you out of your inheritance; many people are actually prospering as a result of applying these principles the right way.

Don’t be misled; remember that you can’t ignore God and get away with it: a man will always reap just the kind of crop he sows!  If he sows to please his own wrong desires, he will be planting seeds of evil and he will surely reap a harvest of spiritual decay and death; but if he plants the good things of the Spirit, he will reap the everlasting life that the Holy Spirit gives him.  And let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t get discouraged and give up.” – Galatians 6:7 TLB

Money Belief #4 – “It’s going to take years for me to be financially free”

If you were raised in a family where poverty or financial struggle was the norm then you could have been conditioned with a poverty mindset that will hinder your financial progress.  Prosperity is not something that has to be in the far distant future, it’s available for you now.   Start by renewing your mind and replace thoughts of lack with thoughts of supply and abundance.  Meditate on God’s Word and all of the goodness He has freely given to you.

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:32 NIV
